First crush

Sydney has a crush.

We found out about it last week when she kept asking if she could go to the 2nd church service. (Sometimes Sydney stays with Stephen if he has to do the welcome team for 2nd service, but typically we're just there for 1st). We asked her why, and after a few mumbles, we got out of her that Mercer went to 2nd service, and she wanted to see him. Mercer, we asked? Yes, a kid who goes to her school- in fact, his mom is a KG teacher there. They chase each other at recess and make each other laugh across the tables at lunch.

I got to witness this crush firsthand at church this Friday. Both Sydney and Mercer were there, and she was acting like... Well, a girl with a big ol' crush.

That night, we were flipping through her little journal notebook that she writes and draws in. She hurried past these couple of pages. I couldn't resist, and went back when she was asleep to see what it was. Awwww, is all I have to say. So sweet.  (Though I don't think Stephen echoes my sentiments)

A day off

Ahhh, I took a personal day today!  I never usually take personal days, as I'm always trying to keep as many days as I can for a possible sick child.  But, I have 3 to take and I think I'm going to take them.  Ooooh yeah.

Anyways, I took today off because I had to register Taylor for pre-K.  I dropped Sydney off at school and went in to ask about my specific registration time, and they said- hey, let's go ahead and do it now!  So Taylor was registered by 8:25 this morning.  I had the rest of the day ahead of me. :)

I shopped for Easter baskets/easter egg hunts for the kids' schools, grocery shopped at Publix, got a mani/pedi, got a last minute highlight/hair cut, ran at the park and ran into a friend, whom I got to walk and talk with, mailed my niece's 1st bday present out, got gas, picked up Sydney, stuffed Easter eggs, got Parker and Taylor from school, went on a walk with them/played on the playground, came home, got in the shower with all 3, cooked dinner, and now they are in bed!  Whew!  Although I am literally exhausted right now, it was a great day.  I'm hoping this is what next year may look like every day.  (except for the fact that I laid all of them down over an hour ago and they are still awake... where do they get this energy and can I get some??)

Well, it's official...

After (almost) 10 years in the books, I will be walking away from teaching this fall.  I turned in my letter of resignation for the end of this school year today.  What??!  Well, let me backtrack.

Back in October, after 2 weeks of h-e-double hockey sticks- you know, everyone being sick, Stephen being gone 80% of those two weeks, and me not being able to work (or being called from work to have to pick up a sick child)... oh, and this was the ER-visit-with-Sydney-week.  You can read all about this week here.  Good times.

After that second week, Stephen was driving home from the airport.  I remember it vividly- I was home with one of the sick kiddos, he called, I burst into tears and told him I needed to stay home next year.  I couldn't do it anymore, with him traveling and all of this being on me.  (let me just preface this with I've never really wanted to be a stay-at-home mom.  God bless them.  It just wasn't for me. And Stephen never really wanted me to, either.  It was just how we were.)  But, I spat those words out, and his response?  "Okay, let's talk about it!"

So we did.  And we crunched numbers.  We made some changes (like the electric car) that would help us save $$.  We put as much into savings every month as possible.  We found out Taylor got into the lottery-funded pre-K, so we don't have to pay for her to go anywhere.  We had a plan for months.  And now that plan is official!

We're definitely going to have to cut back.  No $100 Walmart trips anymore, buying things off the list.  Eating out will be a rare occasion.  Trips?  Who knows.  My roots will be much longer next year.  Clothes... well, who needs new clothes, anyway?

But... I will be able to cook every night.  I can take the girls to and from school.  I could be room mom, something I had to turn down this year.  I can actually take the kids to do extracurricular activities.  I can volunteer at the school and at our church.  I can take Parker to the library and teach him things.  I can be 100% at one thing- being a mom and a wife- and not be half-assed in everything I do.  I can wear sweatshirts and workout pants and tennis shoes everyday.  And no makeup!  what what?

I will miss my school... well, I'll miss my co-workers.  Kids come and go every year, and I will miss them, but that's going to happen if I'm working or if I'm not.  I'll miss the laughs I have every day with my friends.  I'll miss my guaranteed paycheck.

I won't miss the stress of teaching unmotivated 8th graders a topic 95% of them hate.  I won't miss having the pressures of the "test" on me.  I won't miss the lesson plans or the observations or the drama that occurs at schools.  I won't miss the disrespect or the talking back I get everyday from my students.  I won't miss the IEP or RTI meetings I attend, or the PLC meetings, or the faculty meetings bright and early.  I won't miss the dreaded call from daycare on my cell phone, knowing something bad happened.  I won't miss the last minute Chick-fil-a runs because I didn't pick the kids up until almost 6, the hubby is out of town, and we're all starving.  I won't miss having only about 2 hours a day with my children.  I won't miss being away from my loved ones to spend hours with kids who don't care.

So, here is to my new adventure.  I may eat my words, but I really don't know if I'll ever be back to education.  It's what I'm trained to do, but I just don't agree with it anymore.  I don't agree with all the testing we have to do.  These kids are tested to death!  I don't enjoy it anymore.  I've lost the love and drive I used to have for it.  I would consider private school, but it would be hard to go back to public.

If I ever do something again, I want it to be simple.  Stress-free.  I don't care about the money.  I just want to be able to function and support the most important people to me- my family.

Happenings

Here are other random things that have been happening here lately!

Sydney Lou-Who (our quick early morning attempt, at least!)

Temp: 77 degrees here

Last week- snow!  This was the most our area saw.

Our little architect...

...with a part-time DJ gig on the side.

Sydney's first book.

Fro-yo! (this was before our car was hit in a parking lot.  uggh.  Luckily, we are fine and the car is drive-able.)

Every single animal ended up in our closet.

My little OCD child.

Taylor and her buddies!

Giddy-up.

A tupperware party- Taylor got to help!

Parker wearing a girl's sparkly flip-flops.

Sigh.  (Not really.  I think it's hilarious!)

Can you tell?

Facetiming with his cousin.

Stone Mountain

For our 10 year anniversary, Stephen planned a fun little getaway for the two of us.  I'm really weird, in that I don't want us to fly/go too far away without the kiddos.  Our kids are at those ages where they are big enough to do a lot, but still too little to understand what can happen to them if/when they get into something they shouldn't.  Plus, 3 kids 6 and under is a lot for anyone to have to watch.  So... sweet Stephen planned an overnight at the Marriott hotel at nearby Stone Mountain!  He arranged it for my sister and fam to come down Saturday afternoon to watch our kiddos.  He made dinner reservations and had activities planned.

We couldn't have asked for better weather!  We headed there Saturday afternoon to hike the mountain.  It was about 65 degrees and perfectly sunny.  The hike up was fun, but once we were at the top, we realized we needed to hurry to get down, to our car, checked in, showered, and to dinner.  We ran almost the whole way down, then we had a mile to go to where we parked. (Doh!)

Anyways, we made it to the hotel and made good time.  We were upgraded to a really nice suite (I'm telling you, these upgrades are fantastic!  Thanks, Stephen's work!) with a beautiful view of the lake.

We got dressed and headed to The Melting Pot, our traditional anniversary dinner spot.  We both saved up room and barely ate all day, knowing we would eat a lot that night.  O.M.G.  We were both in a food coma.  It was so much food!  It was DELICIOUS, but so much.  I really could go for the bread/cheese and the dessert, and skip the other stuff. ;)

Sunday morning, we went for a 3 mile run around the mountain, then ate breakfast at the restaurant at the hotel.  Not too much later, we headed back home to our sweet kiddos.

It was a great getaway, and a perfect way for us to celebrate!

Jag of the Month

Sydney was so excited to be Jag of the Month for February!  The "snow" delayed the original morning celebration, but we finally got to crown her Jag of the Month on March the 5th.

Her picture was displayed all month in the entryway of the school.

getting her certificate and goodie bag.

She was so excited!

Twins!

Apparently, Sydney is a budding artist.  She had two pieces of art displayed in the hallway.  She definitely doesn't get that from me.

One decade

10 years ago today, I married my best friend!  10 years, 3 beautiful babies, a few houses, a few jobs, a few degrees, and lots of laughs later, here we are today.  We're so blessed.  Here's a stroll down Memory Lane from that wonderful day- March 5, 2005.

Who is that toddler??

My Grandmom.

Cousins.

I totally got him.
