The Many Faces of Sydney...

I did a blog like this last summer... here is an updated version!

"Dada", "Why???", "I mean, REALLY?!"

These are the words you would hear most if you eavesdropped on the K-Bash household.

Taylor has officially spoken her first word, "Dada"!  She started saying it about a week ago.  We didn't think too much of it at first, assuming it was just some sound she was making.  But, it became apparent really quickly that when Stephen was around, she would smile and say "Dada!".  When it was just me and her, she'd make other noises but not say "Dada."  It's only when she saw her daddy.  And she says it so sweetly.  Very cool!  (although, come on, Dada first?  Really?  I just carried you for 9 months, and this is what I get?  ;)

Sydney has learned about the question, "Why?"  Here is a sample conversation:

Me: "No, we can't go outside on the playground."
Sydney: "Why?"
Me: "Because it's raining."
Sydney: "Why?"
Me: "Because there are water drops falling from the sky."
Sydney: "Why?"
Me: "Because Mother Nature decided we needed rain."
Sydney: "Why?"
Me: "Because it's been too dry lately."
Sydney: "Why?"
You get the point.

I appreciate the fact that she's inquisitive... I do.  But, seriously, one time there were about 20 "whys" and I had run out of things to say.  I finally just said some made up word that made her confused and forget to ask "Why??". ;)  It really does make you think about what exactly you are saying!

The last saying makes me crack up.  Whenever someone does something that annoys Sydney, she'll say, "I mean, REALLY?!" and the look she gets on her face is priceless.  It is so funny.  Today, she was arranging her ABC magnets on the fridge, and one of the magnets fell off.  She went, "Why did you fall?  I mean, really??!"

Too funny.  Besides all the talking going on, we have been busy busy bees!  I'm trying to get a lot of stuff done around the house.  I feel a little guilty that most of our days are spent with me doing stuff while trying to entertain the girls at the same time (or dragging them on a million errands), but my hope is to get some of these big things done that I've wanted to do, and then have the rest of the summer to just chill. Oh, and Sydney has decided to no longer take naps, so that's an extra 2 hours a day I try to fill.

Things I've done lately are:
-painted the downstairs bathroom the same color as our breakfast nook.  I've been doing a lot of shopping to try to transform it into a more elegant look, rather than the more country look it hard before (with yellow walls and sage green accents).  I'm now going with the blue walls, dark brown shelving and frames, and white accessories.  Plus, we're going to add crown moulding.

-I made a wedding album.  6 years later isn't too late, is it?  We were too cheap when we got married to invest in the big album with our photographer, so we opted to just get the photos and the rights to them, saying we'd make one on our own.  All I ever did was one of those Snapfish books.  Well, one of my friends showed me an album she made for her trip to Africa, and it was so glamorous... only to find out she did it completely online for under $50.  what??  So, that was what I accomplished today.  It is ordered and should be here in a week.  And can I just say, it was so fun looking back at all of those pictures and reliving the moments!  I still remember what it was like to walk down the aisle, whose faces I remember seeing, what it was like during our first dance, etc.  Can't wait to see it!

-Our computer, also about 6 years old (which I think, in computer land, translates to the age of 142), is on the outs, so we purchased a new one online. We also decided to purchase an external hard drive to save all of our pictures on, since they take up so much disk space. I have been transferring pictures (and also disks that I burned old pictures on to previously save space on the computers) to the new external drive. It took so long, but that is finally done. And I can't wait to look back at some of these pictures I haven't seen in years... I'm so bad about not printing my digital shots, so if they're not on my computer, I don't look at them anymore!

-Other time has been filled with gym appointments (trying to finish up the last few personal training sessions I have from when I started them 2 summers ago! aahh!), picnics outside, playing with the neighbors, laundry, going to see movies with friends, dinners, karaoke, laundry, ironing, laundry, trying to read and couponing! (yeah, yeah!)
I'll leave you with some pictures... my mundane days should end soon, as we'll be out of town on 4 trips in the next month. I'm excited for that, and I know that the girls (Sydney especially!) will love what is to come!

Taylor loves her swing!

My friend Sara and I had dinner in Little 5 Points and saw this awesome play called Avenue Q!  This is us with some of the characters.

Late night at the neighbors... the girls had movie time upstairs while the parents played downstairs.

My sweet girl, who MUST be getting a tooth because she gnaws on everything!

"But why?"

Picnic in 95 degree heat!

No one can make Taylor laugh like her sister!

Couponing, Part Deux

Ok, I promise my blog is not going to turn into a "Guess how much money I just saved!" kind of thing... well, after today. ;)

I just have to share my second couponing experience.  First of all, I spent a couple hours yesterday making a coupon binder, with all the coupons sorted alphabetically by brand name.  (I bought 20 business card binder-inserts and have basically one insert per letter).  I have built up my coupon collection a good bit in the last week, so it's nice that they're all organized now.

So, last night I was looking up some more deals and matching them to my coupons.  I went to Publix, CVS, and Kroger, toting along both girls, this morning.  Here's what all I got, and I spent a total of $38.63:

All of these items would have been $89.67, so I saved 57%!

So, here's the breakdown:
**At Publix, I stocked up on more noodles and spaghetti sauce, milk, cake mix and icing, Baby Orajel, and 2 Freschetta Pizzas, which were about half of my bill (being $5.00 each on sale and after coupons).  I spent $20.90 at Publix.  (Oh, and there were 3 or 4 things I could have gotten free- or even gotten credit back for- but they were all sold out!!!  I think if you want to take advantage of free things, you need to go on the first day of their weekly sale...)

**At CVS, I actually profited 97 cents!!  I got Zyrtec, a Schick Hydro razor with 5 blades, and a diet coke.  I went out of pocket $3.03 and have $4.00 Extra Care Bucks to spend next time.  The funny thing is... I didn't need the Zyrtec, but it cost $5.99, and if you bought that, you got $5.99 in Extra Care Bucks.  Plus, I had a coupon for $4.00 off.  So, it was like the Zyrtec was free, and it gave me a -$4 balance.  Then, my second transaction, I got the Schick Razor, which was on sale for $8.00.  With my $4 balance, it was only $4, and then I had a $4 off coupon!  (Plus, it gave me $4 in Extra Care Bucks back!)  So, it's like both were free! (though I did have to pay the tax, which was $.62)

Note to self: The dumb thing I did was do them out of order... I should have bought the Schick razor first, and then the Zyrtec.  Because, when I got the Zyrtec, I had to pay $2.41 out of pocket ($5.99 cost minus the $4 coupon, plus tax).  Then, I got the $5.99 Extra Care Bucks back.  Next, when I got the razor, I only owed $4 on it after the coupon, so that left me with $1.99 additional Extra Care Bucks- and once you use part your ECBs, you have to use the whole amount or it goes to waste.  So, instead of wasting the $1.99 left over money, I bought a Diet Coke to take it up.  If I had done it the other way, I still would be out of pocket $2.41, but I'd have $5.99 ECBs to use next time instead of $4.

So, I guess the best thing to do is do the lowest ECB-back item first, and the largest one last.

**At Kroger, I did really well!  I spent $18.70 and got the following:
-6 rolls of Viva Paper Towels
-12 Double Rolls of Cottonelle toilet paper
-2 boxes of Cheez-Its
-Jumbo pack (36 count) of Huggies diapers
-Baby oatmeal cereal

All the items (minus the oatmeal) were part of a "Buy 5 participating items and save $5.00" deal.  So, if you bought 5 items, you could save $1.00 on each.  I found 5 items we needed or could use in the future, matched them up with coupons, and saved about $19.  The paper towels ended up being $3.99 (normally $8.99); the toilet paper was $3.99 (normally $8.29); the Cheez-Its were $1.45 each (normally $2.95 each); the Huggies were $5.99 (normally $9.99) and the oatmeal was $.48 (normally $1.48).  All of these things would have been $37.08 total.

Yay!!!  I can see how this is addicting.  Stephen always laughs at me when I tell him what "great" deals I get on things... he'll be like, "Man, I found this $15,000 item and only paid $8,000 for it!" (he's just trying to say that I buy things because of their cheap price, yet I'm still spending money...)  I see his point.  I do. :)  But, he's actually really happy for me to be doing this, as these are things we will definitely use!

OK, I promise I won't keep doing this... this can't be too exciting to read, but it's really fun to do! :)

Next stop: Walmart, where I can get 2 American Greeting Cards for free, and $1.00 of my beloved People magazine. :)  Also, JC Penney's where I can get a free Sephora mascara.

I heart summer

I am loooving this lazy, summer life.  Sleeping in, staying in our PJs all day long, catching up on movies I haven't seen and books I haven't read, spoiling my girls... Ok, not really.  Spoiling my girls, yes.  I've been staying up waaay too late and getting up with Taylor around 6:30 AM.  I've been hitting the gym, running errands, organizing things around the house, trying to teach Sydney some educational lessons each day.  Playing outside is a priority, as well as nap times.  I've read two books and I've seen one movie that I missed in the theater.  We've been pretty go-go-go! and this summer is already flying by!  aahhhh!

But, I'm definitely enjoying it.  A lot.  It's just so nice to be able to focus on Sydney and Taylor and not have the stress of work breathing down my neck.

So, here's a quick recap and some pictures of the first couple of weeks of summer break:

For Memorial Day weekend, we flew to Raleigh for one of my best friend's weddings.  It was held on the campus of UNC.  All 4 of us survived the flight (though lugging 2 car seats, a stroller, and all the luggage is not easy!) and we had a wonderful weekend of friends, food, and fun, including a Greek restaurant for the rehearsal dinner, a bridesmaids' luncheon in downtown Chapel Hill, the beautiful wedding and reception, and brunch the morning after the wedding.  We got to see the campuses of UNC and Duke, which I enjoyed.  A wonderful weekend celebrating a beautiful couple!

Got to see Stacie and Mel, who came down from NYC.

Duke University.

UNC.

Erica, me, and Ashley.

Landon and Taylor... future spouses, maybe?

Gorgeous Jackie... both inside and out!

The next weekend we went up to the mountains of South Carolina to my parents' lake house.  In case you didn't read it, I had written a blog last year about the significance of this place in my life.  Anyways, we went there for the weekend, and Sydney got to hang with her Grandmom, D-Dad, Aunt Kendall, and cousins Madeline and Kerrigan.  It was Taylor's first trip, not only to the mountains, but also to South Carolina!  It was fun- relaxing and peaceful.

Taylor's first dip in any kind of outside water.

Since then, we have been hanging around good ol' GA!  Here are some pics of the girls and our happenings...

Several of our neighbors are members of a nearby country club, so they invited us along to the pool.  Here are Sydney, Allie, and Avery walking to the pool together.

Taylor's first dip in a pool!

Our "redneck" pool.  Hope I'm not offending anybody, because we love it! ;)

Fingerpainting.

Elvis wannabe?

Extreme Couponing

Have you watched that show called Extreme Couponing?  I've seen it a few times and think that those people 1) have WAY too much time on their hands and 2) will probably be on the show Hoarders in a few years. :)  No, but seriously, it's like an art form.  The people who coupon well have to be very organized, very detailed, and very calculated.

Those sound like me... no?  Ok, maybe my next life. :)

My friend was telling me how she spent a few bucks at CVS and got about $40 worth of stuff.  She told me about a website that kind of lays out where to find coupons, tells what's on sale at what store and what coupons you should use to save the most money, etc.  I was curious, so I started looking at it the other night.  Stephen went to the grocery store the next day and I think we got a couple items free.  Not a big deal, but nice!  He also bought me a magazine the lady who does this website (http://www.southernsavers.com/) recommends to get, because there are a bunch of coupons in every issue.

So, last night, we went to dinner with some friends, came home, got the girls in bed, and Stephen went to go play poker with the guys.  From 10 PM until 2 AM, I was on the computer, printing off coupons, matching up deals with the coupons in my magazine, finding the best deals around town.  I was making lists of what items to get at which stores.  I was originally planning on hitting up 4 stores this morning, but figured I should jump into this more slowly, and settled for just going to Publix and CVS.

So, the verdict is...

at Publix, I spent $6.98 and got all of this:

Don't worry... the hand was sold separately.

Publix was really easy... you just try to combine the B1G1 deals with store and/or manufacturer coupons together.  There were two items I could have gotten completely free, but they were sold out (I see I'm not the only one in the area that is taking advantage of this site!).  I even got a credit of $.21 for that Dove shower gel I bought!  The ketchups were only $.29 and the noodles were about $.18 each.  The Bayer was totally free!

CVS was a little trickier.  The way you can save a lot of money there is to do several transactions.  You can earn Extra Care Bucks back when you buy certain things, which you can then apply to your next purchase.  I had a whole plan written down... I was going to do 6 different transactions, and only have to come out of pocket about $7.

However, this definitely didn't go as planned.  First of all, I couldn't find a couple of items at the local CVS that I had wanted to get.  Also, the manager told me I could only do 3 transactions max.  So, I was trying to reconfigure things in my head, figure out what order to ring the items up in... it was kind of hectic.

At CVS, I ended up spending $17.08, and got 2 bottles of Motrin, 96 count box of diapers, 3 air fresheners, and 3 boxes of tic tacs.  Both Motrins ended up being free, the diapers were about $14, and the rest was about $3.  I saved a little over $25 here, and I had saved $27 at Publix.

Here is everything I got today for $24.06:

I'm pretty proud!  Overall, I give myself a B-.  I've gone and gotten a subscription to that magazine, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to get the Sunday paper again.  If I can get it all organized while I'm not working, I'll have more of a chance of sticking to it when I go back to work!

Maybe you'll see me on an upcoming episode of Extreme Couponing...?

Then and Now

Check out Taylor at one week of age, and Taylor at 6 months of age!  She doesn't even look like the same person!

6 Month Stats!

I took Taylor to the doctor for her 6 month check-up today!  Here are the stats... drum roll, please...

-Weight: 20 pounds even (>95%)
-Height: 28 inches (>95%)

I don't mean to sound like I'm measuring her up to Sydney when I compare, it's just that Sydney is the only person I have to compare Taylor to! :)  Anyways, Sydney was this height and weight between 9 and 10 months!  It's actually working out for Taylor in the clothes department with her being the size she is, because she's running about 3 months bigger than Sydney was, and her birthday is ~3 months after Sydney's... so, clothing-wise, the sizes are matching up to the right seasons! :)

Everything else looks great... I received the go-ahead to give her more solids, including puffs and table food!  Her ears are better (the ENT last week found she had an ear infection) but she's started wheezing again, so she's going to start using an inhaler/nebulizer treatment.

I'll leave you with a picture of my sweet 6-month-old!
